The Japanese-language Wikipedia ( Japanese ウ ィ キ ペ デ ィ ア日本語 , Wikipedia Nihongo-ban ) is the Japanese version of the international Wikipedia project. It is the fourth largest Wikipedia behind the Cebuano , Wáray-Wáray and Vietnamese -language Wikipedia in a non-European language (as of June 2018).

The Japanese-language Wikipedia was set up in September 2002.

The Japanese language version had 200,000 articles in April 2006 and 500,000 articles in June 2008. Currently (April 2019) it has over 1,145,000 articles and 1,463,785 registered employees, of which 85,404 are active.

mascot

Wikipe-tan ( う ぃ き ぺ た ん ) is a manga character and the mascot of the Japanese version of the encyclopedia Wikipedia and was uploaded on January 8, 2006 by the illustrator Kasuga on the Japanese imageboard 2channel . She has blue shoulder-length hair, blue eyes and a maid's apron. There are two puzzle pieces in her hair and another on her chest. The puzzle pieces are based on the Wikipedia logo. Wikipe-tan has appeared in numerous media, such as Dresdner Latest News from June 15, 2007. It is available under the free license Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 .

The operator of the Japanese language Wikipedia and all other language versions of the free internet encyclopedia is the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco, USA.

Awards

In 2004, the Japanese-language Wikipedia was awarded the 2004 Web Creation Award Web-Person Special Prize by the Japan Advertisers Association .
