Jaroslav Maria , with his own name Jaroslav Mayer (born February 24, 1870 in Rakovník (Rakonitz); † November 3, 1942 in Auschwitz concentration camp ) was a Czech lawyer, lawyer and writer of Jewish origin.

Life

Jaroslav Maria attended grammar schools in Benešov , Hradec Králové and Prague , where he graduated from high school in 1887 and continued to study law. In 1893 he obtained the title of Dr. Iur. He then worked as a trainee lawyer (trainee lawyer) in Rakovník, Hradec Králové and Prague, after taking the exams, he worked at the District Court in Litoměřice (1896-1900) until he decided to start his own business and set up a law firm in Křivoklát (1900 –1903), Beroun (1903–1908) and Tábor (1909–1942). During the retaliatory actions of the National Socialists after the assassination attempt on Reinhard Heydrich in Prague, Maria was arrested by the Gestapo on July 6, 1942 and after stopping at the Prague prison Pankrác and Theresienstadt, she was taken to Auschwitz , where he fell ill with typhus and died a few months later.

In addition to his contributions to the journals Právník (1895, 1897) and Čas (1897), he also wrote essays and various reflections for Moderní revue , Cesty , Rozpravy Aventina , etc. After his debut in 1898 with the trilogy V předvečer věku , he wrote more than 40 literary works Pieces; at first there were novels, among other things from the judiciary, and criticized the judicial practice and members of the judiciary. He was influenced by naturalism . In his novels he increasingly looked for a discussion of social problems, especially in the areas of family, eroticism and culture.

Jaroslav Maria traveled a lot and reported on his experiences in numerous travelogues. His travel reports from Italy were particularly well received by them, especially the book Itálie .
