Carl Hermann Schmolze , also Carl Heinrich Schmolze or Schmolzé (born April 11, 1823 in Zweibrücken , † July 31, 1859 in Philadelphia ), was a German genre painter, illustrator and poet with a democratic conviction.

Life

Schmolze, the son of a royal notary, did a three-year apprenticeship with a painter in Metz and studied painting at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich from October 24, 1840 . In Munich he also worked for the Fliegende Blätter from their first year in 1845 . Together with Carl Stauber, Schmolze created illustrations for the little treasure chest of the Rhenish family friend's little treasure chest (Cotta, Stuttgart 1846). In 1848 he co-founded the democratic satirical magazine Leuchtkugeln .

He took an active part in the revolution of 1848/49 . In 1848 he became a member of the Künstler- Freikorps in Munich, then he excelled in his home in the Palatinate. In 1849 he had to emigrate and went to London via Paris , studied for a year at the Art Academy in Antwerp , emigrated to the United States and settled in Philadelphia. Here he founded a German artist association and wrote and drew for democratic magazines. He died at the age of 36.
