Gunnar Jarring (born October 12, 1907 in Brunnby , Malmöhus län ; † May 29, 2002 ) was a Swedish diplomat and Turkologist .

Jarring studied at Lund University , where he received his Ph.D. for his dissertation "Studies on an Eastern Turkish Phonology". Jarring has now worked in the field of Turkish Studies at Lund University. After spending the entire 1930s on it, he worked for the Swedish Foreign Ministry. In 1940 he became an attaché at the Swedish embassy in Ankara . During his further diplomatic career, Jarring held posts in Tehran , Baghdad and Addis Ababa . In 1948 he became the Swedish ambassador to India . From 1956 to 1958 he was Sweden's Ambassador to the United Nations and was in this period from 1957 to 1958 for Sweden in the Security Council . Jarring was Ambassador to the United States from 1958 to 1964 . He then became ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1964 to 1973 .

After the Six Day War in 1967 and the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 242 , Jarring was appointed Special Envoy for the Middle East by Secretary General U Thant . He held this office until 1990.

During and after his diplomatic career, Jarring repeatedly published works on the Turkic languages . Since 1981 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
