description

The usually tree-like, upright, columnar and freely branched Jasminocereus thouarsii reaches heights of growth of 3 to 7 meters and has one trunk. Its yellow to brownish yellow, cylindrical shoots are ribbed, 10 to 50 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 3 to 5 centimeters. The 16 to 22 ribs are low. The 2 millimeter wide areoles are typically 6 to 9 millimeters apart. The approximately 40, uneven, stiff to somewhat flexible, radiating thorns are yellowish and darken with age. They are 0.5 to 5 centimeters long.

The cream-white to olive-green flowers are 5 to 9 centimeters long, 2 to 6 centimeters in diameter and open at night. The flower cup and tube are slender and covered with scales and hair. The greenish to reddish purple fruits are spherical to elongated and are 5 to 9 centimeters long with a diameter of 1.5 to 4.3 centimeters. The adherent remnants of the flowers are persistent. The kidney-shaped seeds are usually black and 1 to 2 millimeters long.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Jasminocereus thouarsii is distributed on eight islands in the Galápagos Archipelago . The genus was first described in 1920 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . Its only species was described for the first time in 1899 as Cereus thouarsii by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber and placed in the genus Jasminocereus by Curt Backeberg in 1959 . The type species of the genus is Cereus galapagensis .

There are three varieties :

Jasminocereus thouarsii was in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Vulnerable (VU) , d". H. classified endangered. In 2013 the species is known as " Least Concern (LC) ", i. H. listed as not endangered. The subspecies are no longer included in the consideration.
