Louis Marie Aubert Du Petit-Thouars (born November 5, 1758 at Château de Boumois , Anjou , † May 11, 1831 in Paris ) was a French traveler and botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Thouars ".

biography

After two years of imprisonment during the French Revolution , Thouars traveled to Mauritius in 1792 , where he made a map of the island. He then moved to Madagascar and collected orchids on extensive expeditions . In the following years he traveled to Réunion , French Polynesia , Tristan da Cunha and the Cape Colony . In 1802 Thouars returned to Paris and published a number of studies on African orchids. In 1820 he was accepted into the Académie des Sciences .

Thouars described over 140 plant taxa and genera, including Hydrostachys and Bulbophyllum .

Dedication names

According to Thouars, the plant genera are Thuarea Pers. from the family of grasses (Poaceae), Thouarsiora Homolle ex Arenes of the family Rubiaceae (Rubiaceae) and Aubertia Bory from the family of Rutaceae named (Rutaceae), and also the type epithets several taxa such Voacanga thouarsii and Cycas thouarsii .
