Hydrostachys ( gr. "Wasserähre") is the only genus of the family of Hydrostachyaceae .

description

Hydrostachys species are usually annual or, more rarely, perennial herbaceous plants that grow submerged in fresh water . They form tubers and take root in the water bed. The submerged leaves are simple, pinnate, or compound; they often look like small fern leaves. There are small (sometimes undetectable) stipules present.

The plants are mostly dioeciously separated sexes ( dioecious ) or rarely monoecious separated sexes ( monoecious ). The small, unisexual flowers are grouped together in annual inflorescences ; they are above the surface of the water. Bloom are not available. The inconspicuous male flowers consist of only one stamen . In the female flowers are two carpels to a top permanent ovary grown. They form capsule fruits that contain many seeds.

Occurrence

The genus is distributed in Africa from Angola , DR Congo and Tanzania to KwaZulu-Natal and Madagascar .
