Arce is an Italian commune in the Lazio region , Frosinone province in central Italy with 5597 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 23 km east of Frosinone and 105 km southeast of Rome .

geography

Arce is located on a hill above the Liri valley . It is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle del Liri .

It is divided into the districts of Arce, Campanile, Campostefano, Collealto, Collemezzo, Collenoci, Colleolivo, Colleone, Fontanelle, Frassi, Isoletta, Marzi, Murata, Portone, Puzzaca, Tramonti and Valle.

The nature reserve Lago di San Giovanni Incarico / Isoletta includes the area of ​​the ancient cities Fregellae and Fabrateria Nova as well as the water-rich area at the confluence of the Sacco and Liri rivers. Above all, it provides a habitat for numerous water birds.

The neighboring municipalities are Ceprano , Colfelice , Falvaterra , Fontana Liri , Monte San Giovanni Campano , Rocca d'Arce , San Giovanni Incarico and Strangolagalli .

Arce is located on the ancient Via Casilina , now part of the road network as the SS 6, which leads from Rome to Campania . The city is also on the A1 Autostrada del Sole (junction Ceprano), which connects Milan with Naples . There is a railway connection via the Avezzano-Sora-Roccasecca railway .

history

In ancient times, Arce was part of the city of Fregellae , which dates back to 125 BC. Was destroyed by the Romans. The remains of the city have been excavated since 1978 under the direction of Filippo Coarelli near the Isoletta district. In the first century, Quintus Tullius Cicero owned an estate called Arcanum in what is now Arce.

A place Arcis does not appear again in a documentary until around the year 650 AD . In 702 Arce was handed over by the Byzantine Emperor to the Lombard Duke of Benevento Gisulf I.

In 1191 Heinrich VI conquered . the castle of Arce. It remained in the possession of the Hohenstaufen family until it was conquered by Charles I of Anjou in 1265 . He then gave the rule of Arce to followers. Most recently, the niece of the King of Naples, Caterina Ferrante d'Aragona, was Baroness of Arce. Through her marriage to Leonardo della Rovere in 1472 it came to his family. The Della Rovere sold Arce and Sora in 1580 for 120,000 Scudi to the Boncompagni .

In 1799, Arce was sacked by French troops. On May 27, 1849, Arce was captured by Garibaldi's soldiers for a single day for the short-lived Roman Republic , but it was not until 1861 that it was finally incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy .

In 1927 Arce came from the province of Terra del Lavoro to the newly founded province of Frosinone and left southern Italy geographically after more than 1000 years .

Attractions

  • The baroque parish church of Santi Apostoli Pietro e Paolo was built between 1702 and 1744, but the second bell tower was not completed until 1954.
