Jason E. Box (born 1970 in Denver , Colorado ) is an American climate scientist. He is Professor of Glaciology at the Geological Research Institute for Denmark and Greenland .

Life

Box has participated in numerous Greenland expeditions since 1994 and spent z. Sometimes several months in camps on the ice. From 2002 to 2012 he was a fellow and researcher at the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center at Ohio State University , where he also taught from 2003 to 2010.

Act

Box is recognized as the world's leading expert on the effects of climate change on the Greenland ice sheet . He operates a network of weather stations on the inland ice there.

He is one of the authors of the Fourth , Fifth and Sixth Assessment Reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Box is actively involved in the debate about the climate crisis . He states that the scientific findings force him to be not only a scientist but also an environmentalist. He is known for formulating the findings of climate science in everyday language. He once said, “Isn't it more like we're all awake in a nightmare? Our species is pretty intelligent, about technology and so on. But she is not wise. We ran over the cliff, like in these comics, we hang in the air and run and don't fall yet. If we don't take massive countermeasures soon, our world will look like a Mad Max movie in a hundred years . "

Together with the globalization critic Naomi Klein , Box showed in an article in 2015 for the New Yorker that the Paris Agreement was important for pacifying the world.
