Jasper Tudor , 1st Duke of Bedford KG (* about 1431, † 21 / 26 December 1495 ) was the younger brother of Edmund Tudor and thus uncle of King Henry VII. Of England.

Life

Jasper was the second son of Owen Tudor and the former Queen Catherine of Valois , widow of King Henry V . He was the half-brother of Heinrich VI. , who made Jasper Knight of the Bath in 1449 , raised him to Earl of Pembroke on March 6, 1453 and in 1459 accepted him as a knight in the Order of the Garter .

Jasper was an adventurer with considerable military expertise acquired in the early days of the Wars of the Roses . After his defeat at the Battle of Mortimer's Cross by Edward, Earl of March , he kept in touch with Margaret of Anjou , wife of Henry VI, as she fought to regain her son's inheritance, and he kept Denbigh Castle for the house Lancaster . Jasper Tudor also raised his nephew Heinrich, who later became Henry VII, until 1461. After that, William Herbert took over his supervision . After King Edward IV returned from the House of York in 1471, Jasper took the young Henry into exile in Brittany . Tudor died in December 1495 and was buried in Keynsham Abbey in Somerset .

Marriage and children

Jasper married Katherine Woodville (1458-1497) on November 7, 1485 . Katherine was the daughter of Richard Woodville, 1st Earl Rivers and Jacquetta of Luxembourg . She was the sister of Elizabeth Woodville , Anthony Woodville, 2nd Earl Rivers , and Richard Woodville, 3rd Earl Rivers, and also the widow of Henry Stafford, 2nd Duke of Buckingham .

Jasper and Katherine may have had a premature son (* 1490). Katherine survived Jasper and later married Sir Richard Wingfield of Kimbolton Castle. According to tradition, Jasper had two illegitimate daughters:
