Jatropha cathartica is a species of plant in the genus Jatropha fromthe milkweed family (Euphorbiaceae).
features
The species grows as a herbaceous plant with a large, tuberous root, which reaches a diameter of up to 20 centimeters. Several, up to 30 centimeters long, fleshy shoots are formed. The side shoots are spread out. The deep five to seven lobed leaves are up to 10 centimeters long and up to 6 centimeters wide and are on a petiole up to 12 centimeters long. The divided stipules are up to 4 millimeters long.
The loose inflorescence is multi-flowered and stands on a 10 centimeter long stem. The male flowers form sepals 2.5 millimeters long and 5 red and 8 millimeter long petals . The female flowers are up to 5 millimeters in size. The capsule fruits contain 3 seeds.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.
Occurrence
Jatropha cathartica is distributed in bushes on clay soils in southern Texas and northern Mexico .
Taxonomy
The species was first described in 1832 by Manuel de Mier y Terán and Jean Louis Berlandier . Synonyms for the species are Jatropha berlandieri Torrey (1858) and Adenoropium berlandieri (Torrey) Small (1927).
