particularities | second highest mountain in North Africa |
The Jbel Ouanoukrim , a 4089 m high, multi-peaked mountain range, belongs to the High Atlas ; it is the second highest mountain in Morocco and therefore also in the whole of North Africa.
geography
The mountain is located in the Toubkal National Park only about 4 km (as the crow flies) from the summit of Toubkal in a south-westerly direction. Its two highest peaks, the Ras Timesguida and the only 6 meters lower Ras n'Ouanoukrim are close together and are separated from each other by a 3968 m high saddle. Further north is the Ras Afella ( 4015 m ), which is also multi-pointed , a much more independent peak that is sometimes rated as a separate mountain.
Ascent
The year-round ascent of the Jbel Ouanoukrim, which is possible from the mountain village of Imlil, is about as 'easy' as that of the Toubkal, but is rarely undertaken because it is less well known. The winter snow melts completely in spring (April), with the exception of a few small snow fields in shady rock hollows.
