Jean-Claude Cousseran

Jean-Claude Cousseran (born September 15, 1944 in Toulouse ) is a French diplomat.

Life

From 1970 he worked at the French Foreign Ministry as a secret diplomat and crisis manager in Beirut (1973–1974), Baghdad (1974–1977) and Tehran (1977–1980) before joining the United States in 1980/81 in the permanent representation of France Nations in New York. He then worked in the cabinet of Defense Secretary Charles Hernu . From 1986 to 1988 he was general consul in Jerusalem . Between 1989 and 1992 he worked in the Ministry of Defense and from 1992 to 1993 as diplomatic advisor to Pierre Bérégovoy . From 1993 to 1996 he was the French ambassador to Damascus and from 1996 to 1999 in Ankara .
From February 14, 2000 to July 25, 2002 he was General Director of the French foreign intelligence service
DGSE .
On November 1st, 2002 he took over the functions of the French ambassador to Egypt .
