Jean-François de Gondi

Jean-François de Gondi (* 1584 in Paris ; † March 21, 1654 ibid) was the first Archbishop of Paris from 1622 to 1654 .

Life

He was born the third son of Albert de Gondi , Duke of Retz (1581) and Marshal of France (1573). His older brothers were Cardinal Henri de Gondi (* 1572), Bishop of Paris, and Philippe Emmanuel de Gondi (* 1581) galley general.

Jean-François de Gondi succeeded his uncle Pierre de Gondi and his brother Henri de Gondi as Bishop of Paris. For him, the diocese of Paris was raised to an archbishopric on October 20, 1622 .

He died in Paris on March 21, 1654 and was buried in the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral.

His coadjutor and successor was his nephew Jean-François Paul de Gondi , Cardinal von Retz.
