Jean-Jacques Gautier (banker)
Jean-Jacques Gautier (born September 21, 1912 in Geneva , † May 1, 1986 in Chêne-Bougeries ) was a Swiss bank manager. He became internationally known for his initiatives to prevent torture .
Life
Gautier studied law at the University of Geneva , graduated in 1937 with a licentiate and in 1941 with a doctorate. From 1937 to 1946 he worked as a lawyer, after which he moved to the private bank Pictet & Cie .
In 1973 he resigned as a private banker in order to fully devote himself to the prevention of torture. In 1977 he founded the Swiss Committee against Torture (later the Association pour la prévention de la torture ). He launched the idea of an international and national system for inspecting prisons. This monitoring system was enshrined in international law in the European Convention against Torture of 1987 and in the Optional Protocol (OPCAT) of 2002 to the UN Convention against Torture of 1984.
