Jean-Jacques Manget , Latinized (Joh. Jac.) Mangetus, (born June 19, 1652 in Geneva / Republic of Geneva ; † August 15, 1742 ibid) was a Geneva doctor who is known for editing various compilations, especially the Bibliotheca Chemica Curiosa (Geneva 1702) and medical encyclopedias.

Manget

Life

Manget was the son of a merchant and was supposed to be a clergyman and studied theology, but then turned to medicine, which he learned largely through self-study, and received his doctorate in Valence in 1678 . He first practiced in Geneva and from 1699 was the personal physician of the Elector of Brandenburg.

The Bibliotheca Chemica Curiosa was, along with the Theatrum Chemicum, one of the most extensive collections of alchemical literature that ever appeared. It was published in 2 volumes, each with over 900 pages. In addition to his extensive editorial work, he wrote, for example, a monograph on the plague that was raging in Marseille and Provence at the time. As in his other collective works, he mostly reprinted works that had already been published elsewhere. His libraries were also sales successes, the Bibliotheca anatomica, Bibliotheca medico-practica and the Bibliotheca pharmaceutico-medica saw two editions each, despite the size of these works, the Bibliotheca chirurgica and the Bibliotheca scriptorum medicorum only brought it to one edition. They were all written in Latin. In 1711 there was a three-volume abridged English version of the Bibliotheca anatomia and a shortened German version (1707) from the Bibliotheca chemica curiosa. The Bibliotheca scriptorum medicorum also contained bio-bibliographies by medical authors (with around 4000 entries).
