Jean-Paul Deconinck

Jean-Paul Deconinck (* 1959 ) is a Belgian major general who was among other things commander of the army of the Belgian armed forces between 2014 and 2017 and commander of the UN troops in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) from 2017 to 2018 was.

Life

Deconinck joined the armed forces after school in 1979, and completed his training as an officer in the armored force . He then studied at the Faculty of Social and Military Sciences (SSMW) of the Royal Military Academy in Brussels , where he obtained a master's degree in military and social sciences . He was also a graduate of the École de guerre in Paris and the Royal University Institute for Defense in Brussels. On September 30, 2014, Major General Deconinck succeeded Major General Hubert De Vos as Commander of the Army , the land component of the Belgian Armed Forces .

On March 2, 2017, Deconinck was appointed as the successor to Major General Michael Lollesgaard from Denmark by UN Secretary General António Guterres to command the UN troops in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). His successor as commander of the Belgian Army was then Major General Marc Thys , who was previously head of the systems department of the material resources department.

Deconinck is married and has three children.
