Jean-Pierre Papon

Jean-Pierre Papon (born January 23, 1734 in Puget-Théniers , Département Alpes-Maritimes , † January 15, 1803 in Paris ) was a French historian and Provençalist .

life and work

Papon graduated from school in Turin, became an oratorian at the age of 18 and taught as a high school teacher in Marseille, Riom, Nantes and Lyon. From 1780 he was a librarian in Marseille, fled the Revolution to the Cevennes and in 1796 became an associate member of the Institut de France (Académie des sciences morales et politique), which was newly founded in 1795 .

Papon published a monumental history of Provence: Histoire Générale de Provence , 4 vols., Paris 1777–1786, Nîmes 1996 (2900 pages), in the second volume of which he incorporated longer passages on the troubadours and on the history of Provencal language. Something similar can be found at the end of his Provencal travel guide, which has been translated into German: Voyage Littéraire de Provence, suivi de quelques lettres sur les Troubadours , Paris 1780; ud T. Voyage de Provence , 2 vols., Paris 1787; ed. by Louise Godard de Donville [* 1941], Paris 1984 (German: Journey through Provence , translated by Ernst Benjamin Gottlieb Hebenstreit [1758–1803], Leipzig 1783). He is one of the authors who prepared the scientific Romance studies and Provençal studies of the 19th century.
