Jean-Pierre Saint-Ours (born April 4, 1752 in Geneva ; † April 6, 1809 there ) was a Geneva history painter .

Life

Jean-Pierre Saint-Ours came from a Huguenot family who found refuge in Geneva at the beginning of the 18th century. Born to the drawing teacher, etcher and enamel painter Jacques Saint-Ours and Suzanne Constance Favre, he married his cousin Hélène Bois-de-Chêne. After initial training with his father, Saint-Ours studied from 1769 in Paris, in the studio of Joseph-Marie Vien at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture . He graduated in 1780 with the award of the first prize in painting.

Saint-Ours settled in Rome in 1780 , where he was recognized as a successful creator of classicist history paintings. Gabriel Constant Vaucher was one of his students from 1782 to 1789 . In 1792 he returned to Geneva and participated in the revolutionary government until 1796, became a member of the National Assembly in 1793, of the Legislative Committee from 1794 to 1795, and from 1793 also of the Art Committee.

In addition to social activities, he remained active as a painter. He painted, among other things, the Figure de la République (1794) and the earthquake cycle (1792–1806). In 1802, Saint-Ours successfully took part in the competition to celebrate the Peace of Amiens in Paris . In addition to the history pictures, he also created portraits of Geneva citizens.
