Wayne Berndt

Wayne Francis Berndt OFMCap ( Japanese ウ ェ イ ン ・ バ ー ン ト ; born May 15, 1954 in Fitchburg , Massachusetts ) is an American religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Naha .

Life

Wayne Berndt entered the Capuchin Order in New York and made his first profession on August 16, 1976 . After the perpetual profession, which he made on June 28, 1980, he went to Japan, where he studied the Japanese language until 1983. On May 21, 1983, he received the sacrament of ordination in Yonkers .

In addition to duties in the pastoral care of various parishes in the dioceses of Naha and Saitama , he was an associate lecturer at the Ryūkyū University from 1986 to 1998 and had several leadership tasks as custodian within his order. Since 2014 he has been pastor in Yonabaru.

On December 9, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Naha. The Archbishop of Nagasaki , Joseph Mitsuaki Takami PSS , ordained him episcopal on February 12 of the following year . Co- consecrators were his predecessor Berard Toshio Oshikawa OFMConv and the Archbishop of Tokyo , Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi SVD .
