Jean-Baptiste Barol (* 1873 in Vallauris , France ; † 1966 ) was a French ceramist .

Life

Jean Barol was trained as a ceramist by Clement Massier in Golfe Juan , Vallauris in southern France. In 1912, Barol founded the ceramic factory BACS in Vallauris with the three artists Marius Alexandre, Jean Carle and François Sicard. BACS was an anagram of the first letters of their last names. Barol was the glaze artist, Alexandre the painter, Carle the decorator and Sicard the potter. Here Barol perfected the artisan technique of cloisonné when applying enamel to shiny metallic vessels.

In 1917 Barol left the BACS company with Francois Sicard. The two founded the Montieres factory in Amiens in northern France, where they continued to produce iridescent and enamelled ceramics in Art Nouveau style . Barol acted here as artistic director until 1920. During his stay in Amiens, Barol taught ceramic techniques at the local École supérieure d'art et de design d'Amiens .

In 1920 Barol returned to BACS, where he worked as an artist until the company closed in 1927. Here he also produced ceramic items in the Art Deco style . In the 15 years that BACS was producing, Barol had regularly taken time off working for Faïencerie Picard in Amiens.

In 1927 Barol received the Meilleur Ouvrier de France award and taught ceramic techniques at the École Jules Ferry . Until his death in 1966, Jean Barol continued to work with ceramics in Cannes-La Bocca and in his birthplace Vallauris.
