Julia Maier

Julia Maier (* 1988 in Reutte ) is an Austrian jazz musician (piano, vocals, composition and arrangement).

Live and act

Maier began long-term, classical piano training at the age of four. As a teenager she switched to jazz; she studied jazz piano at the Graz University of Art (with Olaf Polziehn ), then instrumental music education , jazz composition (with Ed Partyka ) and ensemble management (with Michael Abene ).

She released her debut album in 2011 with her Julia M. Quartet . In 2014 a first album was released with their big band New Shore Orchestra, which was expanded by a string quartet . On her album Songs for Your Heart (2016) she interpreted hymns and new pieces with spiritual texts. In 2017 she presented her song Lord, Have Mercy on My Life at the New Apostolic Pentecost Service in Vienna , which was broadcast worldwide and received a great response.

Maier composes and arranges for various big bands, orchestras, choirs and other ensembles, including for the opening of the International Wagner Forum 2014, for the Frankfurt Radio Bigband and the Metropole Orkest . She also directs the Austrian Chamber Jazz Ensemble .

Prizes and awards

At the international big band competition Jazz Comp Graz 2011 she won the 2nd main prize, the audience prize and the special prize for women composers with her compositions. In 2014 she was awarded first prize at Jazz Comp Graz . In 2015 she received the Hilde-Zach Composition Grant from the City of Innsbruck.
