Jean Boisselier

Jean Boisselier (* 1912 in Paris ; †  1996 ibid) was a French archaeologist who dealt in particular with Southeast Asia .

Life

At the beginning of the Second World War , Boisselier was a reserve officer, but was captured in June 1940 and only released in 1945. He began studying art history at the Louvre School in Paris and graduated with a thesis on the statues of the Khmer under Philippe Stern . In 1949 he went to Angkor to work with Henry Marchal and in 1950 became a curator at the museum in Phnom Penh . From 1953 Boisselier was responsible for the conservation work in Angkor. In 1955 he turned to Thailand and did research in the U Thong region on the prehistory of the Dvaravati period. In 1963 he published a major work on the development of the statues of Champa and worked at Silpakorn University in Bangkok .

In 1970 Boisselier returned to France and took over the leadership of the research group Archeologie et civilizations de l'Asie du Sud et du Sud-Est at the University of Paris III , which he held until 1980.
