Jean Desgrouais

Jean Desgrouais (* 1703 in Magny-en-Vexin , Département Val-d'Oise ; † October 6, 1766 ibid) was a French Romance scholar , linguist and lexicographer .

life and work

Jean Desgrouais (usually called Monsieur Desgrouais ) was a teacher at the Collège Royal in Toulouse. In the manner of a «  Vaugelas of the 18th century», he published the successful and exemplary handbook of linguistic stupidity, ie the puristic use of language by his Toulouse pupils, under the title:

  • Les gasconismes corrigés . Ouvrage utile à toutes les personnes qui veulent parler & écrire correctement, & principalement aux jeunes gens, dont l'éducation n'est point encore formée, Toulouse 1766, 1768, 1776; Nouvelle édition corrigée et augmentée, Marseille 1792; Nouvelle édition revue, corrigée et augmentée, Toulouse 1801, 1812; Paris 1972, Nîmes 1997.

According to some sources, Laurent Angliviel de La Beaumelle is a co-author of the book.
