Laurent Angliviel de La Beaumelle
Laurent Angliviel de La Beaumelle (born January 28, 1726 in Valleraugue , Département Gard , † November 17, 1773 ) was a French writer .
La Beaumelle converted to the Reformed Church in Geneva and was appointed professor of French literature at the University of Copenhagen in 1749 . In 1751, almost at the same time as Voltaire , he came to Sanssouci ( Potsdam ) at the invitation of the Prussian King Frederick the Great . Due to his mes pensées , La Beaumelle soon fell out with Voltaire and returned to Paris in 1752 with a deadly hatred of Voltaire .
On the basis of his Notes sur le siècle de Louis XIV. La Beaumelle was arrested in 1753 and locked in the Bastille . Soon after his release, the publication of his Mémoires de la Maintenon brought him back to prison for a year. Voltaire is said to have been involved both times. After his release, La Beaumelle settled in Toulouse as a freelance writer . Around 1770 King Louis XV let him . appointed to the Bibliothèque royale and granted him a pension.

Most of his writings have a polemical, even pamphlet-like character or speculate (like the letters from Frau von Maintenon in the Mémoires ) on the curiosity of the public; his best work is indisputably the Réponse au Supplément du siècle de Louis XIV, ou Lettres à Voltaire (1754, 1763), distinguished by wit, intellect and energy , his worst the Commentaire sur la Henriade (1775), a true model of incompetent, pathetic criticism .
