Jean Dufy

Jean Dufy (* 1888 in Le Havre ; † May 12, 1964 in Boussay , Indre-et-Loire department ) was a French painter and brother of Raoul Dufy .

Life

Jean Dufy was born in Le Havre in 1888 and came from a family with many children and talented musicians. He began with a commercial apprenticeship and only gradually discovered his love for painting. Visiting an exhibition in Le Havre in 1906 was key to his decision to become an artist. After his military service from 1910 to 1912, he moved to Paris , where he met various artists and writers.

In 1914 Dufy presented his watercolors for the first time in the “Galerie Berthe Weill” in Paris and found great recognition. Strengthened by this, he continued to work tirelessly and mainly drew and painted landscapes, flower and animal motifs. In 1916 he worked with his brother Raoul for the well-known textile atelier "Bianchini-Férier"; For over thirty years he designed the flower and animal motifs for the Théodore Haviland porcelain factory in Limoges .

In 1925, Jean Dufy received the gold medal for the decoration of the “Châteaux de France” service at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et industriels modern in Paris. In 1920 he returned to Paris and lived in the artists' quarter on Montmartre , in the immediate vicinity of Georges Braque . The following years were marked by a lively exhibition activity, both with his painting and with porcelain art. The music and art of the Parisian cultural scene in the post-war period had a decisive influence on Jean Dufy's expressive colors, but at the same time he was always drawn to nature and depicting landscapes.

For the Paris World Exhibition in 1937 , Jean Dufy and his brother Raoul received the order from the general director of the “Compagnie parisienne de distrubution de l'électricité” to design the 600 square meter ceiling for their “Electricity Pavilion”.

In the years 1950 to 1960 Jean Dufy undertook numerous trips abroad (Europe and North Africa), the impressions of which are reflected in his work. Nevertheless, the city of Paris remained his preferred and inspiring city motif, which he immortalized in numerous oil paintings and watercolors - the city gates, the streets, squares, carriages, the Eiffel Tower and the Seine . In his work, Jean Dufy found his own visual language, which is characterized by a cheerful, luminous color. He preferred a bold color palette and used colors as a magical source of light.

On May 12, 1964, two months after the death of his wife Ismérie, Jean Dufy died in Boussay.

Works

His works can now be seen in the most prestigious European and American museums such as the Musée National d'Art Moderne and the Center Pompidou in Paris, the Albertina in Vienna, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art in New York .

To this day, the work of Raul Dufy is better known in France, but without questioning the quality of Jean Dufy. Jean Dufy, on the other hand, exhibited successfully in New York art galleries.
