Jean François De Boever (born June 8, 1872 in Ghent ; † May 23, 1949 ibid) was a Belgian symbolist painter, illustrator and art teacher.

He attended the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Gent with Louis Tytgadt and Jean Delvin which he graduated in 1896.

Inspired by the works of Felicien Rops and Armand Rassenfosse , his painting was influenced by the symbolism of the turn of the 1900s. He mostly painted female nudes , to which he added rotten skeletons as a memento-mori contrast. These motifs have been with him all his life.

Commissioned by the wealthy art collector Léon Speltinckx (1879–1964), he began to illustrate Charles Baudelaire's poetry collection “ Les Fleurs du Mal ” in 1914 with gouache pictures . By 1924 he had created around 157 illustrations, only 86 of which have survived. They are considered De Boever's most important work.

From 1897 he exhibited in numerous salons and exhibitions both in Brussels and abroad. From 1900 to 1932 he worked as a drawing teacher at the Ghent Art Academy. In 1903 he was a founding member of the artistic and literary circle of Ghent.
