Jean Masse (politician)

Jean Masse (born January 3, 1911 in Marseille , † August 10, 1987 ibid) was a French politician. From 1956 to 1958 and from 1962 to 1978 he was a member of the National Assembly .

Masse came from Château-Gombert , a rural district of Marseille. His father Marius Masse was the deputy of the mayor Henri Tasso from 1935 to 1939 . Jean Masse graduated from the Lycée Thiers and joined the SFIO . He became secretary to the young socialists in the Bouches-du-Rhône department . In 1940 he briefly took part in World War II . In 1945 he moved to the General Council , in 1947 he became a member of the City Council of Marseille. After Gaston Defferre was elected mayor in 1953, Masse became his deputy. In the parliamentary elections in 1956 he stepped behind Defferre and Francis Leenhardt as third party on the list and was able to win a seat in the National Assembly. In 1957 he was also elected President of the General Council. After he resigned from the National Assembly in 1958, he was able to move back in in 1962 and remained a member until 1978. Masse died in 1987. His son Marius Masse was also a member of parliament.
