Jean Morlet

Jean Morlet (born January 13, 1931 in Fontenay-sous-Bois , † April 27, 2007 in Nice ) was a French geophysicist. He was a pioneer of the wavelets .

Morlet studied from 1952 at the École polytechnique and then worked at Elf Aquitaine in oil prospecting. In the mid-1970s, while analyzing seismic signals with Gabor transformation, he came across wavelet functions, for which he is also the namesake (French Ondelette for small wave). In 1982 he published about it and in 1984 he introduced the wavelet transformation (Continuous Wavelet Transform, CWT) with the Croatian-French physicist Alex Grossmann .

In 1997 he received the Reginald Fessenden Award from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and in 2001 the Prix Chéreau Lavet from the Académie des Technologies.
