Jean Mueller, the first female telescope operator at the Palomar Observatory.

Jean E. Mueller (* 1950 ) is an American astronomer .

In 1985 she was the first woman to be hired to operate the large telescope at the Palomar Observatory , after having held the same position at the Mount Wilson Observatory since 1983 .

The asteroid (4031) Mueller , discovered on February 12, 1985 by Carolyn Jean Spellmann Shoemaker , was named after her.

Success as a discoverer of celestial bodies

  • She is the discoverer of 15 comets , seven periodic and eight non-periodic.
  • In addition, she discovered a total of 10 asteroids between 1987 and 2003 , two of them together with her colleagues.
  • By 2006 she had discovered 98 supernovae , and was the co-discoverer of 9 others. This puts it close to Fritz Zwicky's record , who made 121 discoveries.
