Jean Passerat

Jean Passerat (born October 18, 1534 in Troyes , † September 14, 1602 in Paris ) was a French writer and poet.

Life and works

Passerat studied at the University of Paris and initially taught at the Collège de Plessis . In 1572 he became professor of Latin at the Collège de France . Here he wrote commentaries on Catullus , Tibullus and propertius and some Latin-language works, including the two-volume Kalendae januariae et varia quaedam poemata , which appeared in print in 1606. Nicolas Bourbon the Younger was one of his students .

Passerat became known as the main author of the satire Ménippée published in 1594 ( La Satyre Ménippée de la vertu du Catholicon d'Espagne ). As a lyricist, he wrote some famous poems, including the Ode Du Premier jour de mai and the Villanelle J'ai perdu ma tourterelle . A well-known political poem was Sur la journée de Senlis .
