Nicolas Bourbon the Younger

Nicolas Bourbon the Younger (* 1574 in Vendeuvre-sur-Barse or Bar-sur-Aube ; † August 6, 1644 in Paris ) was a French oratorian , Graecist , neo-Latin writer, man of letters and member of the Académie française .

life and work

Nicolas Bourbon the Younger was the great-nephew of Nicolas Bourbon the Elder (1503–1550), author of the Nugae , portrayed by Hans Holbein the Younger . Bourbon was a student of Jean Passerat . He taught successively at the Collège des Grassins , the Collège de Calvy and the Collège d'Harcourt. Jean-Louis Guez de Balzac was one of his students . At the instigation of Cardinal Jacques-Davy Duperron , he was professor of Greek at the Collège royal from 1611 to 1620 (predecessor: George Critton, 1555–1611, here from 1595; successor: Pierre Valens, 1570–1641). In 1620 he resigned and entered the oratorio . 1623-1628 he was a canon in Langres . He went back to Paris and received a pension from Richelieu in 1634. He received another pension from Bishop Augustin Potier von Beauvais , who had been his pupil. In 1637 he was elected to the Académie française (seat no. 29). He died at the age of 69.
