Johann Konrad Tobler

Johann Konrad Tobler (born February 27, 1757 in Grub ; † July 14, 1825 Speicher ; entitled to reside in Grub, from around 1766 from Heiden , from 1803 to 1809 from Speicher, then again a citizen of Heiden) was a Swiss textile entrepreneur and politician , representative of the Diet from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Johann Konrad Tobler was the son of Michael Tobler, yarn dealer, linen manufacturer and state ensign and Anna Rechsteiner. In 1781 he married Katharina Lutz, daughter of Anton Lutz, a doctor. Tobler attended the college in Lindau on Lake Constance . He completed a commercial apprenticeship at the Zellweger trading house in Trogen and Lyon . After that he also worked as a yarn dealer and joined his father's business in Heiden in 1776. In 1781 he took over the business. Thanks to the trade in English yarn , he made a great fortune. In 1801 Tobler moved the business and his residence to Speicher. From 1782 to 1794 he was the mayor of Heiden. From 1794 to 1797 he had a seat in the municipal council of Heiden. From 1797 to 1798 Tobler served as the Ausserrhoder state ensign, from 1798 to 1800 as the deputy of the district of Wald and in 1801 as the deputy of the canton of Säntis at the Swiss parliament . From 1814 to 1820 he held the office of regional cap master. Tobler reorganized the state finances and rejected cantonal coinage . His advocacy of a modern state gave him numerous opponents. In 1809 Tobler founded a poor and orphanage in Heiden, then in 1811 a school for the Bissau in Heiden and in 1822 a secondary school . He also certified 100,000 guilders for school and poor purposes.
