Jean-Pierre de Crousaz

Life

Crousaz was professor of philosophy and mathematics and two-time rector at the Académie de Lausanne since 1699 . In 1724 he left Lausanne because of theological differences of opinion and went to the Dutch Imperial University of Groningen as a professor of philosophy and mathematics for two years . From 1726 to 1732 he was in charge of the education of Prince Friedrich II of Hesse-Kassel . In 1738 he returned to Lausanne and was there again professor at the Académie. Crousaz wrote numerous mathematical and philosophical writings. In 1725 he became a member ( associé étranger ) of the Académie des sciences .

He was an opponent of the French philosopher Pierre Bayles and the philosophy of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Christian Wolff and fought against monadology and the doctrine of pre-established harmony . In aesthetics , Crousaz emphasized unity in diversity. His Traité du beau (1714; "Treatise on Beauty") was an attempt to explain subjective differences in aesthetic views. At the suggestion of Cardinal André-Hercule de Fleury, he challenged the teachings of the French philosopher Pierre Bayles and the German philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. He also criticized Alexander Pope's Essay on Man . His correspondence remained unpublished, although around 2000 letters were found.
