Jean Roux (born March 5, 1876 in Geneva , † December 1, 1939 in Basel ) was a Swiss zoologist. His research focus was herpetology .
Live and act
After studying with Émile Yung (1854-1918) Roux received his doctorate in 1899 with a dissertation on protozoa at the University of Geneva . He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Berlin. In 1902 he succeeded Fritz Sarasin as curator at the Natural History Museum in Basel , where he was entrusted with the Fritz Müller collection . In 1913 he turned down an offer from the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt am Main to be able to stay in Basel. In 1937 he left the museum. His successor was Lothar Forcart (1902–1990).
Roux took part in two major expeditions. From 1907 to 1908 he traveled with Hugo Merton to the Aru Islands and the Kei Islands , which are located between New Guinea and Australia. The results of this expedition were published in 1910. From 1911 to 1912 he accompanied Fritz Sarasin to New Caledonia and the Loyalty Islands , which resulted in an extensive monograph on the reptiles in this region in 1913. From 1904 to 1939 he wrote over 35 scientific papers on herpetological topics, particularly careful studies of collections of reptiles and amphibians from Africa, South America, Indonesia, New Guinea and other parts of the world. He first described around 25 species of skinks, lizards and snakes. He also wrote about crustaceans, fish and mammals.
Dedication names
In 1934 Heini Hediger named the Skinkart Lipania rouxi from New Ireland to Roux. In 1913 Fritz Sarasin Roux honored in the epithet of the subspecies Gerygone flavolateralis rouxi the fan- tailed gingygone from the northern Loyalty Islands.
