Jean Tijou († after 1712) of an agent working in England was Kunstschmied of the Baroque .

Tijou probably came from a French Huguenot family and came to England after 1688 in the entourage of William of Orange and Maria II . He probably received his training as a blacksmith in Versailles , because shortly after his arrival in England he began to manufacture the magnificent lattices that border the Privy Garden of the royal Hampton Court Palace on the Thames . The ornate banister of the great staircase at Hampton Court is another of his works. His other works include the courtyard gate and banisters of Kensington Palace as well as the north and south choir screens and other wrought iron work in St Paul's Cathedral in London. He also made banisters and other ironwork for the Chatsworth and Burghley House estates .

In 1693 he published the book A new Book of Drawings , in which he describes various designs for his work. His artistic work established his own style of blacksmithing called Flamboyant .

One of his daughters married the painter Louis Laguerre , who was also involved in the expansion of Hampton Court Palace. He never received full pay for his work at Hampton Court. After 1712 he is no longer mentioned and his further life is unknown.

The Hampton Court Palace fence was part of the first exhibition at the new Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1852.
