Jefferson Peres
José Jefferson Carpinteiro Peres (born March 18, 1932 in Manaus , Amazonas (Brazil) , † May 23, 2008 ibid) was a Brazilian politician ( PDT ) and university professor.
Peres campaigned for the nationalization of the Brazilian oil industry in the 1950s. He was also for the preservation of the Brazilian rainforest, in particular he was committed to the jungle of the city of Manaus and opposed the construction of the BR-319 through the rainforest.
In 1988, Peres, a member of the Partido Democrático Trabalhista ( Democratic Labor Party ), a center-left - party , (the City Council vereador selected) the city of Manaus. He held this position in a second legislative term through re-election at a time when Manaus exceeded the million population limit until he was elected to the Brazilian Senate in 1995.
After his election in 1995, Peres was a member of the Senate until his death in 2008. In the 2006 presidential election he supported the candidacy of Cristovam Buarque , whom he supported as a potential vice-president. However, they were eliminated with 2,538,834 votes, corresponding to a share of 2.64%, but before the runoff election, which Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was able to win.
Peres was temporarily a professor of economics at the Universidade Federal do Amazonas .
