Jeffrey Irvine

Jeffrey Irvine is an American violist and music teacher .

Act

Irvine studied at the Philadelphia Musical Academy until 1975 and at the Eastman School of Music until 1977 . His teachers were Karen Tuttle , Heidi Castleman , Martha Katz , William Primrose , Walter Trampler , Samuel Rhodes , Dorothy DeLay , Charles Castleman , Donald Weilerstein , Shirley Givens , David Cerone and Margaret Randall . From 1977 to 1981 Irvine was Principal Violist of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and taught viola at Wichita State University . As a member of the Carmel Quartet , he won the 1976 Cleveland Quartet Competition ; In 1979 he won first prize at the Aspen Music Festival Viola Competition . As a member of the New World String Quartet , he has performed in Europe and the USA, including at Carnegie Recital Hall and the Kennedy Center .

From 1983 to 1999 he was Professor of Viola at the Oberlin Conservatory , and since then has been Fynette H. Kulas Professor of Viola at the Cleveland Institute of Music . He has also given courses at the Aspen Music Festival and School , the Bowdoin International Music Festival , the Perlman Music Program , the Castleman Quartet Program and the Heifetz International Music Institute . The American String Teachers Association named him Artist Teacher of the Year in 2020 .
