Yehoshua Chankin ( Hebrew יְהוֹשֻׁעַ חַנְקִין Jəhōschuʿa Chankīn , Cyrillic Єхошуа Ханкін , in languages without the sound ch (IPA χ) : also Yehoshua Hankin , Josua Hankin , also: Chenkin ; * 1864 in Kremenchuk , Ukraine ; † November 11, 1945 in Tel Aviv ) was a Zionist pioneer. He was responsible for most and largest land purchases by Zionist organizations in Palestine.

In 1882 he came to Palestine with his father and was one of the founders of Rishon LeZion . He made his first major land purchase in 1890, where Rechovot was soon established. The next year he bought the land for Hadera , then made further purchases for settlements in Galilee, among others .

Accompanied by Chankin, Chaim Weizmann traveled through Palestine for three weeks in September 1907 and visited Jewish settlements. In the same year 1907 the Hohe Pforte issued a ban on the sale of land to Jews (even if they were Ottoman citizens), which remained in force until the revolution of the Young Turks in 1908.

In 1909 and then again in 1920 he bought large parts of the Jezreel plain ( Merchawia , Tel Josef, Nahalal etc.) after negotiating about it since 1897. In 1915 he was expelled from Palestine by the Ottoman authorities as a hostile foreigner , but was able to return in 1918. During his life, Yehoshua Chankin brokered the purchase of more than 600,000 dunams (here: 1 dunam = 1,000 m²) of land in Palestine.

He died in Tel Aviv and was buried on Mount Gilboa .
