Jehuda Amital ( Hebrew יהודה עמיטל ; * October 31, 1924 in Oradea , Romania ; † July 8, 2010 in Jerusalem ) was an Israeli Orthodox rabbi and politician .

biography

Amital emigrated to Israel in 1940 at the age of 16, shortly before the start of the Second World War in Romania. During the Palestine War in 1948, he joined the Israel Defense Forces and served as a soldier in the 7th Brigade . He later became a rabbi and represented a moderate religious Zionism.

In 1988 he was the founder and, until his death, also chairman of the Meimad , a left-wing Orthodox religious party. At the same time he was head of Har Etzion , a joint program of the army and yeshiva . As such, he advocated a land swap with the Palestinians in order to reach a peace agreement .

On November 22, 1995, Prime Minister Shimon Peres appointed him Minister without Portfolio in his cabinet. He held this office until June 18, 1996.

Although the Meimad and the Labor Party won 14.5% of the vote in the 2003 Knesset elections , Yehuda Amital himself did not become a member of the Knesset.
