history

In 1960, Richard Wendt and four business partners bought a sawmill in the town of Klamath Falls in southern Oregon . The company began producing doors with 15 employees. After Wendt's death in 2010, the privately held company sold 58 percent of its shares to the Canadian investment firm Onex for $ 864 million .

In 1993 Jeld-Wen entered the European market.

Klamath Falls, Oregon is the global headquarters. The company's new North American headquarters have been in Charlotte , North Carolina since 2012 .

Geographical distribution

In America, Jeld-Wen operates in the United States , Canada and Chile . The company's Asian subsidiaries are located in Indonesia and Malaysia . The brands Stegbar, Regency, William Russell, Corinthian Doors and Airlite are behind Jeld-Wen in Australia.

In Europe, Jeld-Wen operates 30 production plants in 12 countries, two each in Germany and Austria, and one in Switzerland. The group employs 6,000 people in Europe. The European headquarters are in Løgstør, Denmark . The production sites in Germany are in Oettingen and Mittweida .

Origin of name

In the 1930s, Lester Wendt bought a small farm outside of Dubuque , Iowa as a family retreat. A family competition was held to find a name for the farm. Dick's cousin Jeanette Coughlin came up with the name Jeld-Wen, an acronym for the name Dick and his immediate family (sister, mother and father) and a shortened version of Wendt.
