Jelena the beautiful ( Hungarian : Ilona , Croatian : Jelena Lijepa ; † around 1091) was a Hungarian princess and queen of Croatia by marriage .

She was a daughter of King Béla I of Hungary ( Árpáden ) from his first marriage to Ryksa of Poland . Her brothers Géza I and Ladislaus I were kings of Hungary.

She married King Dmitar Zvonimir of Croatia ( Trpimirović dynasty ; † 1089) at whose side she was queen from 1075. She also had a daughter named Klaudija, Dmitar Zvonimir.

Her niece was Irene of Hungary , mother of the Byzantine emperor Manuel I Komnenos and later venerated in the Orthodox Church as Saint Irene.

Thanks to their family ties, Zvonimir had the support of the Árpáds in the war against the Istrian - Ukrainian margrave Ulrik I , who was married to Jelena's sister Sophia .

Their only son Radovan died during the lifetime of his father, Dmitar Zvonimir, who left no further male descendants. After Zvonimir's death, Jelena was involved in the takeover of the Croatian throne by her brother Ladislaus I from the house of the Árpáden , from which the state association of Croatia and Hungary, which existed from 1102 to 1918, emerged after his death . This coup was also supported by other nobles. Nothing is known about their further fate. She died under unexplained circumstances around the year 1091.
