Ulrich I. (Istria-Carniola)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Count Ulrich I ( Udalrich I ) († March 6, 1070 ) from the House of Weimar-Orlamünde was Margrave of Krain (1050 / 58-1070), Margrave of Istria (1045 / 60-1070) and Count of Weimar (1067 -1070). Some sources also refer to him as the "Margrave of (Lower) Carinthia ".

Live and act

Ulrich's father was Poppo I of Weimar, his mother Hadamut of Istria († after 1040), the daughter of Count Werigand of Istria- Friuli and Willibirg, daughter of victory Hardinger Count Ulrich von Ebersberg († 1029).

In the struggle for the inheritance of the Counts of Ebersberg , who died out with Adalbero II of Ebersberg in 1045 , Ulrich was unable to assert himself seriously (July 12, 1045 inheritance negotiations in the presence of King Heinrich III at Persenbeug Castle , with a collapse). In Thuringia , too, his son Ulrich II should only be able to re-establish himself after 1090.

His cousin Wilhelm IV was betrothed to Sophia of Hungary († 1095), the daughter of the Hungarian king Béla I , but died in 1062 when he wanted to bring his bride home; Ulrich took his place and married the daughter of Arpad ( Sophia ... cuidam de Carinthia copulata ).

Ulrich, who was a supporter of Salier and had a good relationship with Hungary, expanded his Istrian territory in 1063 to Fiume (" Meranien "); his opponents were Aquileia and Venice .

In 1064 King Heinrich IV. Ulrich also awarded 20 royal hooves in Istria (Štih).

In 1067 his cousin Otto I died and Ulrich inherited him nominally as Count of Weimar.

After Ulrich's death in 1070, Count Markwart IV. Von Eppenstein - as related to the Ebersbergers - was probably responsible for the guardianship of Ulrich's children and was also in charge of the margravates.

Individual evidence

  1. According to K. Tangl, the name "Margrave of Carinthia" comes from the fact that Carniola and Istria were trademarks of the Duchy of Carinthia.
