Jennifer Simons (born September 5, 1953 in Paramaribo , Suriname ) is a Surinamese politician. She was chairman of the National Assembly of Suriname from 2010 to 2020 .

Live and act

Simons was born in Paramaribo as the daughter of the civilian worker in the military Alwin Desire Menke and the nurse Irma Helouise Simons. She is the first born in a family with four children.

After attending the Algemene Middelbare School (AMS) and obtaining the university entrance qualification, she studied medicine at the Anton de Kom University in Paramaribo from 1974 to 1979. This was followed by an internship.

From 1981 to 2010 she was employed as a general practitioner at the Ministry of Public Health. First she worked as a district doctor in Onverwacht and from 1982 as a doctor in the Paramaribo hospital. From 1984 to 2002 Simons worked in the Department of Dermatology at the Ministry of Public Health. From 1996 to 2001 she was the manager of the National AIDS Program.

politics

Since 1996 Simons has been a member of parliament for the National Democratic Party (NDP) run by party founder Dési Bouterse . In her party she is a member of the 17-strong main board. During her time as a parliamentarian, she was a member of the a. as a parliamentary group leader of her party and in various parliamentary commissions with a focus on health and the introduction of information and communication technology in education.

On June 30, 2010, in the first session after the parliamentary elections on May 25, 2010 , Jennifer Simons was elected Speaker of Parliament with 26 out of 51 votes.

In the parliamentary elections on May 25, 2015 , the NDP became the strongest party with 26 out of 51 elected MPs. In the first session after the elections, on June 30, 2015, Jennifer Simons was confirmed in her office as Parliamentary Speaker with 33 votes.

On June 26, 2020, Jennifer Simons said goodbye after ten years as chairwoman of parliament. Although she was re-elected as a member of parliament in the parliamentary elections on May 20, 2020 , she did not accept the mandate and, after 24 years, is also leaving parliament as a representative of the people.

Private

Jennifer (short: Jenny) Simons is married to Glenn Geerlings and they have three children. Edward Geerlings, the eldest son, died on July 10, 2015 at the age of 33 in Paramaribo.
