Jens Exler

Jens Exler (* 24. July 1914 in Flensburg , †  27. March 1987 ) was a German amateur theater actor and author who in Low German language especially comedies wrote. His pieces were and are played on many stages in Germany and abroad.

Life

job

Exler was born the son of a linen weaver . He attended elementary school and from 1924 the secondary school in Flensburg. From 1930 to 1934 he trained as a painter and upholsterer and then worked as a journeyman painter in Flensburg. During the Second World War he was a soldier from 1940 to 1945. From 1946 he worked as a technical employee in Flensburg, later as the deputy director of the municipal housing association in Flensburg. In 1976 he retired.

Theater play

At the age of 18, Exler began acting on a club stage. Then he switched to the Low German Stage in Flensburg . Under his leadership (1951–1961) it became one of the leading Low German theaters in Schleswig-Holstein . Over the years Exler has staged numerous of his own as well as pieces by other authors. He played many serious and cheerful roles himself. Guest appearances have taken him to other stages as a director and actor. a. the Ohnsorg Theater in Hamburg .

As a Low German author

With his first play "Swattbunte Farken", Exler became one of the most played Low German authors from 1947 onwards. His works soon became known throughout Germany and abroad thanks to translations into other dialects and into High German. There were also numerous television performances and broadcasts of his plays.

Numerous awards were the reward for his lifelong commitment to the Low German language.

Exler's motto was: "People expect happiness and relaxation after a hard day's work and want to return refreshed to everyday life from where they once laughed heartily!"
