Jens Franke (born June 29, 1964 ) is a German mathematician .

Life

Franke studied mathematics in Jena from 1983 to 1986 and received his doctorate there in 1986 on elliptical boundary value problems in Besov-Triebel-Lizorkin spaces with Hans Triebel . From 1986 to 1988 he was in Moscow, from 1988 to 1989 at the Weierstrass Institute in Berlin and in 1989 at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn . He then went to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton until 1991 and was again at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn from 1991 to 1992. Since 1992 he has been a C3 professor at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Bonn . Franke received the EMS Prize in 1992 and the Oberwolfach Prize in 1993 .

After early work in functional analysis , he devoted himself to questions of number theory , algebraic geometry and the analysis of locally symmetrical spaces , especially automorphic forms . His proof of the Borel conjecture in the theory of arithmetic groups is essential ( Harmonic analysis in weighted L_2 spaces , Ann. Scient. ENS 31 , 1998, 181-279). In the past few years he and Thorsten Kleinjung dedicated himself to factoring large numbers with the number field sieve , which made him known to a wider public. This work led to the successful factoring of the test numbers RSA-200, RSA-576 and RSA-640 of the RSA Factoring Challenge , which is why the competition was discontinued. In May 2007, Jens Franke and Thorsten Kleinjung's team was able to factorize the 1039th Mersenne number . Franke and his co-workers also made suggestions for a hardware implementation of the factorization algorithm.
