Jens Jørgen Fleischer

Jens Jørgen "Ono" Fleischer (* 1948 in Ilimanaq ) is a Greenlandic dog sled driver , expedition traveler and author .

Life

Ono Fleischer was born in Ilimanaq in 1948. He got his first sled dog when he was nine years old . In 1975 he drove the 1200 km route between Ilulissat and Qaanaaq alone in a dog sled. 1979 was a member of the memorial group for Knud Rasmussen . In order to create contact between the individual Inuit ethnic groups , he began to travel long distances. In 1992 he went to Utqiaġvik in Alaska with Jens Danielsen , in 1998 he drove to Kuujjuaq in Canada , in 2000 from Ikpiarjuk to Arviat and then from Puvirnituq to Kuujjuaq and back. In 2001 he received a pacemaker . Nevertheless, he drove from Kangerlussuaq to Isertoq in 2006 , crossing the inland ice to marry his wife Karo Thomsen. During his travels he covered over 20,000 km on the dog sled and is considered the modern Knud Rasmussen, who was his grandfather's cousin.

For his video-documented trip in 1992 he and Jens Danielsen received the Greenland Culture Prize in 1993 . In 2008 he published the book Naggueqatikka tikippakka (translated into Danish: Jeg besøgte mine Stammefrænder i vest og i øst ). In 2019 the University of Greenland , the Danish Museum of Natural History and the University of Copenhagen produced the documentary short film Angalatooq - The Traveler about Ono Fleischer's travels as part of their Qimmeq series on the history of the sled dog. He has also played supporting roles in the films Miss Smilla's Sensation for Snow (1997) and Lysets hjerte ( Qaamarngup uummataa ; 1998).
