Allan S. Hay

Allan Stuart Hay (born July 23, 1929 in Edmonton , Alberta , † August 14, 2017 in Niskayuna , New York ) was a Canadian chemist and professor at McGill University . He is known for the synthesis of polyphenylene ether , from which different blends were developed.

Career

Allan Hay graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950 , and received a Master of Science there in 1952. In 1955 he received a doctorate from the University of Illinois at Chicago .

He was a researcher and manager at General Electric from 1955 to 1988 . In 1975 he also got a job at the University of Massachusetts Amherst .

In 1987 Hay became Professor of Polymer Chemistry at McGill University in Montreal . He held the chair for polymer chemistry until 1995, the chair for chemistry from 1997 to 2014. In 2014 he ended his teaching activities and moved to Niskayuna.

Awards and honors

In 1981 Hay became a member of the Royal Society in London. He received the Industrial Research Institute's IRI Achievement Award in 1984 in recognition of his contributions to science and technology and to society at large for his discovery of oxidative coupling polymerization. In 1985 he received the Chemical Pioneer Award from the American Institute of Chemists .
