Jens Martin Gurr

Jens Martin Gurr (born October 29, 1974 in Hamburg ) is Professor of British Cultural and Literary Studies and Chair of the Department of British Anglophone Literature and Culture at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Essen. Since 2008 he has also been the spokesman for the Urban Systems profile at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Life

Gurr studied English and German (MA) at the University of Mannheim and received his doctorate summa cum laude from the Gerhard Mercator University Duisburg in 1999 with a thesis on Lawrence Sternes Tristram Shandy and the dialectic of the Enlightenment (English and literature). He then worked from 1999 to 2003 as a management consultant at the consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton . In 2003 he received his habilitation at the University of Duisburg-Essen. There he worked as a private lecturer and, after several appointments as visiting and substitute professorships at home and abroad, has held the chair for British literary and cultural studies since 2007.

Gurr has published numerous scientific articles on current research questions in Anglophone literary and cultural studies and is often invited as a speaker on literary and cultural studies as well as university policy issues.

  • Literary and cultural history
  • 18th-century British literature
  • British Romanticism

In particular, he has recently emerged as co-founder and spokesman for the interdisciplinary profile focus on Urban Systems at the University of Duisburg-Essen. The media interest in the research area is great. The affiliated doctoral program ARUS is funded by the DAAD .
