Jerónimo Saavedra Acevedo (born July 3, 1936 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ) is a Spanish politician . Between 1983 and 1987 and from 1991 to 1993 he was President of the Canary Islands , an autonomous community in Spain .

In 1972 he joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, the PSOE , and the Spanish union Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT). Saavedra was Minister of Education and Science in the central government in Madrid in 1995 and 1996 . In 1996 and from 1999 to 2003 he was a senator in the Cortes Generales . In 2006 he was the top candidate for the mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria , to which he was elected in the 2007 municipal elections.

Acevedo has been openly gay since 2000 .
